The union has been conspicuously absent in the
administrative ethics and accountability debate.
Ellen Bernstein once told me that Character Counts!
was Don Whatley's baby.
Don Whatley was the President of the Albuquerque Teachers Federation, when the union led the effort to establish the Pillars of Character Counts! as the actual standard of conduct for students and for their role models.
Don Whatley is a founding father of Character Counts!.
He had it kicked out of him by administrators like
Peter "you can't just tell the truth" Horoscak.
I have always argued that, if the leadership of the APS
was actually accountable to the Pillars of Character Counts!,
teachers would be treated a whole lot better.
So where is the union on the concept of honest
administrative accountability to meaningful standards of
conduct and competence for eight measly hours a day?
Why is it OK with them that the senior role models of the
student standard of conduct, are not actually accountable
to that standard of conduct;
to the obvious disadvantage of teachers?
... and students, and every other APS stakeholder
except the good ol' boys that run the APS.
And is that a make or break issue for union membership?
I guess we'll see.
Good questions. Expect few answers.

More than a few union members are wondering

Our "autonomous" 1-office union in ABQ like to paat itself on the back that they got us our pay raise a couple of years ago.
This is usually thier defensive response for being unresponsive to the needs of their membership.
In my estimate, they had very little to do with the big pay raise, Bill Richardson signed that into effect, not APS, and not the Union on Mountain Rd.
However, they did get us the 1-cent increment per year pay-raise add-on. Is that what they felt we were worth? (No one has yet to explain how each year we get 1-cent more per year for experience.- what an insult!).
Thanks for reading.
Ched, do you know if the Union gets to hire an accountant to go over the APS books to see if they can find extra cash for raises?
If they did that like the Fraternal Order of Police does, the Union may have a way to break this on a NATIONAL level by submitting any ironclad evidence of corruption and graft to the Feds. The FBI won't listen to Joe Citizen, but maybe the Feds That Be(the lawyers) will listen to Joey Union?
