Why is character" not an election issue?

It is hard to imagine anything more important than the personal
character of a political candidate or public servant. I would
suppose that most every problem in government can be traced
back to someone's lack of character.

Yet it never seems to come up in the discourse before an
election.

Is it by a gentleman's agreement between candidates?

Is it because people who live in glass houses shouldn't
throw stones?

From national polls that rank professions according to
trustworthiness, we find politicians ranked down near
used car salesmen. Perhaps character is just something
that we don't expect from politicians.

Perhaps voters really don't care about the "character" of their
candidates or public servants.

In which case, it would seen that,
you really do get the government you deserve.
