Tim Whalen, the Manzano High School Principal

who's bright idea it was to form a student militia to crack
down on violence at Manzano High School (unrefuted),

As a somewhat friend, and a somewhat critic of Tim Whalen, I would like to offer my observations as he leaves APS.
Without going into too much detail, and betraying personal confidences and ethics, in my observation, Tim has been a "team player" for APS superintendents. He has respected and accepted most their desires over the years, and he has objected and "guided" superintendents into decisions as well.
All in all, I think Tim served honorably. His worst failings were letting some of his VPs be as autonoumous in thier authority, as he was in his. And some of his VPs over the years were VPs that no one else would accept, so he should have kept a closer eye on them and their decisions.
His relations to the various superintendents over the years were (as far as I know) amicable, but he balked them at times... sometimes for pride or personal reasons, but mostly for the good of the school.
The recent string of APS supes took a toll on him. I think he was promised positions above being principal of MHS by at least 3 APS supes, then was dropped from consideration w/o any real reasons given.
My overall assessment of the situation is that Tim was a "team player", but not a "good ole boy", as many of us thought. My proof is that they 1) wouldn't let him in through the "club's inner sanctum" at APS, and 2) I don't think Tim would ever compromise on something like Fire Safety. Lastly, 3) I think Tim would have fudged on Finances if he was in charge, budget/accounting was one of his downfalls.
I've known Tim for many years...for good and for bad. Overall, I think he's an OK guy, with some faults.
Thanks for posting Ched!
