Albuquerque Public Schools; Student Discipline

Where to begin?

Are there problems?
If so, what are they? and says who?

How bad are the problems?

What is being done about them?

Who is responsible for getting it done?

Who will answer these questions?

candidly, forthrightly, and honestly.

I can tell you who won't;

... anybody at all, in the leadership of the APS.

A time, a day, a place

where the leadership of the APS will sit still and
answer legitimate questions about
student discipline in the Albuquerque Public Schools.

A time, a day, a place

where the leadership of the APS will tell the truth,
the whole truth and nothing but the truth

so help me God.

Some of the schools in APS are coming into a "civil war" of sorts on this issue.
Teachers want the severe discipline problems (assaults, drugs, sexual misconduct, weapons, etc...) to be resolved, mainly for the safety of the other students in their care. IT'S NOT BEING DONE!
APD-APS officers and most security want admin to act on the sever discipline problems in accord with the APS-APD training and protocol.
IT'S NOT BEING DONE!
Many Assitant Principles want these sever discipline problems to be resolved because a small % of students take up a large % of their time w/ repeat offenses.. only to find their principles cutting them quick from resolution w/ a variety of weak excuses. Still, IT'S NOT BEING DONE!
Janitors, librarians and secretaries are mocked, belittled and stolen from. They want severe discipline problems to be resolved. IT'S NOT BEING DONE!
In the end, it's in the hands of the onsite "CEO", the principal. Ironically, the 1 person who stands to loose face and privilege and promotion if discipline is properly administered!
1 person bringing so much hardship and misery to so many adults and children by not doing thier job!

I'm very afraid it will take a few dead students ( let's face it, teachers, principals, librarians, nurses, etc really don't count) in a few Heights schools, where property values might slip, before anything is done district wide about discipline in APS.

The last comment is right. We are not learning from other school's past.
They too let things ride, kept their campuses "open" like APS, let cop-assaulters and drug dealers and gang activity continue on campus. At many of these districts, it took a mass killing by students to finally get down to resolving the problems.
We're a ticking time-bomb on this....

Dear Friend,

The Albuquerque Public Schools Board elections are this Tuesday and now more than ever, YOUR vote counts! When it comes to the issues facing District 3, there is one woman with the commitment to make a difference for our students, and that is Anna Armijo.
Anna Armijo has been endorsed by the Albuquerque Journal as the candidate who will bring “varied, important perspectives to the board,” and is prepared to help guide the North Valley/West Side district and APS as a whole through current hard times while focusing on increasing our graduation rates and student proficiency numbers. That includes establishing high expectations and rigorous standards, as well as transparency and “accountability at the superintendent level.”
Anna’s priorities for our students are advocacy, achievement in line with our Superintendent’s targeted goals, to increase parent and community involvement and to UNITE our community for H.O.P.E.--Honest Open Public Education.
Anna is available for discussion of her policies and her commitment to all A.P.S. students’ education. You may contact her via email-annalouarmijo@comcast.net or by phone at 898-6194. Thank you for the opportunity to discuss our initiatives.

Sincerely,
Lisa Peak
