There is a political cartoon in the Trib tonight; Glasgow's View. I can't find it on line so I can't link you to it.
The gist is that, APS police officers are so feeble and incompetent that arming them results only in a ready source of guns for miscreants. It is not a political cartoon in the sense that it does not illustrate any point in the argument over arming APS police, controversial or otherwise.
It is offensive and based on no facts in evidence.
It is a cheap shot; nothing more.
Glasgow,
You're an asshole.

The Trib owes APS Police Officers an Apology

I did not see the cartoon, I get the Journal, but thanks for sticking up for school cops, Ched.
I have not worked there in YEARS but just the description of the cartoon felt like a kick in the gut. I can't imagine how it might make those who currently serve APS as police officers feel.
APS pays lots of people next to no money to do important things for kids learning and safety. Educational Assistants get pitiful pay. So do APS security and police employees. It is EMBARASSING how little APS seems to value core staff in terms of compensation.
Here is the argument I have heard for years about school district police officers: they are lower paid than APD, BCSD, and the State Police. They are lower paid than tribal police. There are not many police officers in the state who are willing to NOT carry a gun when on duty.
These factors make the employability pool for APS cop whats left over after APD, BCSD, SP, and tribal cops get who they want. The people kicked out or who washed out of another agency might find a job in a "less stressful" enforcement arena.
So then, people assume that the people who are willing to work as an unarmed cop who also is the lowest paid around town must have "issues".
Is is true that since EAs get paid less than teachers to be in the same class and carry the same caseload of kids they are all the dregs too? How about dispatchers - or any class of employees that get paid less than APS cops - are they then even lower on the ethical totem pole? Does how much you make decide how noble or evil you are?
The people getting rich in unethical ways are usually already getting good money as high ranking government officials. Manny Aragon - already well to do before the construction scandal, right? Modral and Maes - getting rich from covering up crony faux pas. Already well to do, they need more money? And my point - a job in upper management, old money, a large salary, umpteen degrees, do not make you ethical.
Neither does having no money and working in a low paying job you are good at make you a goon. It merely makes you poor.
