Every ten years, two things happen; there is a federal census and, legislative districts are redrawn to reflect changing populations.
Traditionally, the party in power uses the opportunity to tilt the playing field in their direction for at least the next ten years and possibly, for generations, link.
It's called gerrymandering, wikilink.
It is as indefensible as it is wrong.
Despite the fact that it is a morally and ethically indefensible,
it is a certainty, it is the way things are done,
it is the way the good ol' boys roll.
The practice is in the best interests of political parties and
politicians, not in the best interests of the people
whose government it is.
The obvious solution would be to have an independent third party draw the lines according to the best interests of the people and the process.
Which begs a question;
what can we, the people, do, to ensure that the lines are drawn impartially and in our best interests, other than to trust again, those who have consistently betrayed our trust in past?
The question is not rhetorical.
We have only a few months to figure it out.
To date, neither candidate for Governor, neither DA Susana Martinez, nor Lt Gov Diane Denish, has pledged to put the people above their party. Neither has promised the people fair and honest redistricting as part of the pledge to the people. Neither has promised a process beyond reproach.
Perhaps somehow, the people can make it a campaign issue,
even if they won't.
